The United Kingdom (UK) of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, is sometimes called the United Kingdom (UK) or Britain. The UK is a sovereign nation off the northwestern coast of the European mainland in northwestern Europe. The United Kingdom (UK) contains the island of Great Britain and the north-eastern half of the island of Ireland. The other parts of smaller islands scattered across the British Isles also are parts of the UK. Northern Ireland as well as the Republic of Ireland share a land boundary.
With the North Sea to the east, the English Channel to the south, and the Celtic Sea to the south-west, the Atlantic Ocean borders the UK, which has the 12th-longest boundary in the World. The Irish Sea divides the United Kingdom & Ireland. The United Kingdom has a total area of 93,628 square miles and a population of 68 million people in 2020.
The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy with a unitary parliamentary system. Queen Elizabeth II has been the ruler since 1952. London is the capital of the state and the biggest metropolis. London is a worldwide city and commercial center with a population of 14 million people. England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are the 4 states that make up the United Kingdom. The component countries, with the exception of England, have their own devolved administrations, each with differing powers.
Development of the United Kingdom
The United Kingdom has evolved through a succession of cession, unions, and separations of component countries. The Kingdom of Great Britain was created in 1707 when the Kingdom of England and Scotland signed a Treaty of Union. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was made in 1801 when it joined the Kingdom of Ireland. In 1922, the majority of Ireland seceded from the United Kingdom, resulting in the current United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Although its name was formally changed in 1927.
The United Kingdom has the 5th largest formal gross domestic product (GDP) and the 10th purchasing power parity economy on the planet (PPP). It has a high-income sector and ranks 13th in the world in terms of the human development index.
During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the United Kingdom became the world’s first industrialized nation and the world’s leading power. The UK is still one of the world’s great nations, with an important economic, cultural, military force, scientific, technical, and political punch. It is a recognized nuclear power and ranks 4th in the world in terms of military spending. Since its first meeting in 1946, it has been a regular member of the United Nations Security Council.
