Russia (Russian or Russian Federation) is a transcontinental country that stretches from Eastern Europe to Northern Asia. It is the world’s largest country by area, covering 17,125,191 square kilometres (6,612,073 square miles) and accounting for one-eighth of the earth’s natural livable landmass. Russia is the world’s largest country, spanning eleven time zones and bordering sixteen sovereign nations.

With a population of 145.5 million people, Russia is the 9th most populous country in the world. This is the most populated state in Europe countries. The capital, Moscow, is the main city fully within Europe. While Saint Petersburg, the country’s second-largest metropolis and cultural hub, is the country’s second-largest city. Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Novgorod, and Kazan are among the other significant cities.

Between the 3rd and 8th century AD, the East Slavs became a distinct ethnic group in Europe. In the 9th century, Kievan Rus’ established as a medieval state. The Byzantine Empire gave it Orthodox Christianity in 988. Eventually fell apart of Rus, and among its principalities formed the Grand Duchy of Moscow. Russia had greatly expanded through invasion, annexation, and discovery by the early 18th century, resulting in the Russian Empire, the 3rd-largest empire of the world.

The Russian SFSR became the largest and most important part of the Soviet Union. It is the world’s first officially socialist country, after the Russian Revolution. During the Cold War, the Soviet Union developed as a superpower and a challenger to the United States after playing a crucial part in the Allied triumph in World War II. The gaining independence Russian SFSR proclaimed itself the Russian Federation after the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991. A constitutional amendment was enacted in the context of the constitutional crisis of 1993.

Russia is a major power country

Russia is a major power with the potential to become a superpower. With a universal healthcare system and free university education, it is placed 52nd on the Human Development Index. Russia’s economy is the eleventh largest in terms of nominal GDP and the sixth largest in terms of GDP in the world (PPP). It is a recognized nuclear-weapons state with the world’s largest nuclear weapons stockpile, the second-most powerful army, and the 4th military spending.

Russia has some of the most extensive mineral and energy resources of the world. It is a major producer of oil and natural gas in the world. Russia is a permanent and regular member of the United Nations Security Council. There are other 30 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Russia.
